Day 1 – Depart from Spalding at 8am, after a short convenience stop we will make a longer stop in Richmond, clustered around the picturesque cobbled market place, with its landmark Norman castle, there are a host of independent shops, cafes, pubs, and museums. Arriving at the hotel about 4.30pm
Day 2 – Depart the hotel at 9.45am to Alnwick Castle & Gardens. Walk through history and admire world-class art at this fascinating castle, then stroll through spectacular floral displays at The Alnwick Garden. Alnwick Castle, the second-largest inhabited castle in England, has been home to the Duke of Northumberland’s family, the Percys, for over 700 years. Within its walls, discover the stories of drama, intrigue and extraordinary people. Learn about a gunpowder plotter, visionary collectors and medieval England’s most celebrated knight, Harry Hotspur. Ogle the lavish Italianate State Rooms, filled with one of the country’s finest private art collections including works by Canaletto, Titian, Van Dyck and JMW Turner. While you’re here, don’t miss The Alnwick Garden, an extraordinary contemporary estate where you can explore the tranquil Cherry Orchard, exciting Grand Cascade and intriguing Poison Garden. Alnwick also has one of the world’s largest tree houses, home to a chic and lofty restaurant.
Day 3 – depart the hotel at 9.30am. If you have ever wondered ‘What did the Romans ever do for us?’ you will have a chance to find out today. We will have a guided tour for an exploration of Hadrian’s wall, once the northernmost frontier of the Roman world. Travelling alongside the remains of the immense wall which stretched for 80 Roman miles from coast to coast you will see the remains of some of the defenses along the way. Your guide will tell you stories about the men who build the wall, and the people who lived in the villages and fortresses in the area almost 2000 years ago, with an opportunity to visit the Roman Army Museum which shows an exciting film about the people who lived and worked here. Driving across the windswept moors, it’s difficult to imagine that this was once a thriving community at the edge of the Empire. After lunch, we will visit the charming market town of Hexham with a visit to the ancient Hexham Abbey where you will have an introduction to the history of the church built from Roman stones 1300 years ago. There will be time for a cuppa in Hexham before returning across the moors of the North Pennines to the hotel.
Day 4 – Depart the hotel at 10am for Beamish, the Living Museum of the North. Touch, taste, hear, see and smell history on an unforgettable journey into the past at England’s largest open-air museum. Set in 300 acres of beautiful Durham countryside, Beamish – The Living Museum of the North brings 200 years of English history to life. Hop on a tram and make your way around the vast museum: visit the 1900s town and watch traditional sweets being made in the sweet shop, then visit the dentist (if you dare!). Try a tasty treat from the Edwardian Bakery or a pint at the Sun Inn Pub, then step even further back in time to the 1800s and take a steam train ride through the Georgian landscape on replica locomotives. Immerse yourself in the 1900s at the Pit Village by going down a real mine and enjoying a traditional fish and chips at Davy’s Fried Fish Shop. Staff are dressed in period costume, which makes the experience truly authentic. Visit the photographer’s studio and have your picture taken in Edwardian costume, see traditional remedies being made in the chemist’s shop and try the aerated waters.
Day 5 – Depart from the hotel at 10am, with a stop in Knaresborough. Steeped in history and cloaked in natural beauty, Knaresborough is a quintessential Yorkshire town. It is a treasure trove of ancient architecture, vibrant culture, and picturesque landscapes. Arriving back in Spalding about 5pm
