Marvel at the incredible architecture of Westminster Abbey, an active place of worship and UNESCO World Heritage Site in London. Founded by Benedictine monks in 960 AD, the abbey is Britain's coronation church and the setting for many special ceremonies, including the wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton in 2011 and the State Funeral of Queen Elizabeth II in 2022. Westminster Abbey has been the site of coronation for all British monarchs since 1066 and is home to the ancient Coronation Chair, which is found in St George's Chapel. It is also the final resting place of 30 kings and queens with memorials to Edward the Confessor, Richard II, Elizabeth I, Mary Queen of Scots and more royal tombs found within the abbey. Visit Poets' Corner, where more than 100 poets and writers are buried or commemorated, including Geoffrey Chaucer, William Shakespeare, Jane Austen and Charles Dickens. Step inside the Lady Chapel and gaze up at its awe-inspiring vaulted ceiling; see ancient murals at The Chapter House in the East Cloister; enjoy the Queen's Window designed by world-renowned artist David Hockney; and head to the West Door to pay tribute the statues of 10 heroic Modern Martyrs, including Martin Luther King Jr. The Queen's Diamond Jubilee Galleries are the first major built addition to Westminster Abbey in more than 250 years. Created within the Triforium located seven storeys above the abbey's nave, they not only provide space for display but the most astonishing views of the interior. The gallery has been designed with subtlety and skill, to create an exhibition space that puts the most important artefact the abbey itself - centre stage. The gallery is reached via a new tower designed by Ptolemy Dean - the first major addition to the Grade I-listed building since 1745 - dubbed the Weston Tower. The star-shaped structure is inspired by the Gothic pattern found across the abbey's interiors, and sits between the 13th-century Chapter House and 16th-century Lady Chapel. Weston Tower is built from stone, glass, lead and oak to blend in with the Abbey's existing Gothic architecture, and it houses a new staircase and lift. Fragments of 12th-century glass, found during the excavation of the Triforium vaults, have been reused in its windows, blending old with new. Writer John Betjemen once claimed that the Trofium has the 'best view in London'. Visitors to the Queen's Diamond Jubilee Galleries will be able to look down upon the Great West Door and Cosmati Pavement from the gallery space. Around 300 objects are on display, spanning 1,000 years of history, including the coronation chair of Queen Mary II, Queen Elizabeth I's corset and artifacts from worship and daily life at the abbey. After your visit to the abbey you will have free time in London until 5.30pm
